Every piece of equipment you purchase for your photography business is a major asset, and photography backgrounds are especially important. That is why it is very necessary that every photographer know how to properly store their photo backdrops. Properly stored backdrops will have a longer lifespan and consistently provide excellent quality photographs.

If not properly kept, photo backdrops can get damaged from water, mold and sunlight. Each of these harmful effects can shorten the lifespan of your backdrop and eventually make them appear dull and lifeless in photographs. Here is a list of recommended storage methods for the different types of photography backdrops:

Muslin Backdrops

Muslin backdrops can be stored several different ways. The method you choose will depend upon the style and look you want in the background of your photographs. The muslin can be scrunched up and stored in a plastic container to create random wrinkles, which can add dimension and depth to the backdrop. If you want a seamless, wrinkle-free look, keep the muslin hung up.

Canvas Backdrops

Keep the canvas backdrop hung up on a stand to keep it wrinkle-free. You can also fold the backdrop and store it in the original shipping container.

Vinyl Backdrops

The best way to store vinyl backdrops is upright in the original shipping tube or other similarly shaped container.

Seamless Paper

Seamless paper should be stored in a paper holder, such as a flexible polyurethane unit that can hold up to 12 rolls. You can also store the paper backdrop in either a PVC plumbing pipe or the original shipping tube. The holder should be stored in an upright position, in a dry place away from direct sunlight.

Collapsible Backdrops

These backdrops are great for on-location photo sessions and are made to be easily stored. Properly fold the collapsible backdrops and keep them in their carrying bags.

No matter what type of backdrop you have, try to store it in a dry place that is out of direct sunlight. This will help prevent any discoloration, mold growth and water damage that can occur.
